Little Jakob Beer escapes being seized by Nazis in Poland with the eventual help of a Greek geologist who takes him first to live on the island of Zakynthos and then in Toronto–but even as Jacob becomes a man he can never really escape his history. No wonder, Michaels won the Canada First Novel Award, the Orange Prize, and the Guardian Fiction Prize. Made into a film.
