Brooklyn

by

How lovely this quiet, feeling novel by Colm Tóibín, published in 2009 and listed for many major prizes, about a young Irish emigrée from a jobless Ireland in the 1950s to an exciting but more complex life in the U.S. And how perceptive in its exploration of torn allegiances and the meaning of home. Rare are the movie adaptations that capture the spirit of a great novel, but I loved the film version of Brooklyn also. In fact, I’ve seen it three times: once with one of my daughters, once with my mother, and then with my other daughter!
